Since ancient times, the views of the world among most civilizations have been remarkably similar. They were based on the cosmology of a flat Earth. Ancient Chinese, Indians, Sumerians, Chaldeans, Jews, Egyptians, Babylonians, Greeks, Vikings, and Maya - all described the Earth as a flat surface over which the celestial vault is located.

These ideas existed more than five thousand years ago. A similar worldview is mentioned in the Book of Genesis - the first book of the Torah and Tanakh.

“And God said: Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters... And God said: Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night, and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years. And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth. And it was so.”

Here the term “firmament” is used. In ancient times, it was understood literally - as a solid structure in which the stars are fixed. Similar descriptions are found in other ancient texts, including the Book of Enoch, which also mentions a flat Earth.

Based on these sources, one can assume that our ancestors envisioned the sky as a kind of solid protective shell. In Jewish tradition, the celestial vault was regarded precisely as a physical object located above the Earth.

Ancient Jewish writings say:

“From the Earth to the first firmament - the distance is five hundred years of travel. The thickness of the firmament itself is also five hundred years of travel. Between each of the seven firmaments is the same distance.”

In the times of Noah, according to the biblical narrative, water poured onto the Earth from the heavens. The story of the Great Flood has left a deep mark in the memories of peoples. Anthropologists note that accounts of great floods are found in cultures around the world.

Interestingly, the word “heavens” is used in the plural. For some researchers, this serves as a reason to suggest the existence of multiple celestial levels or vaults.

If one considers the atmosphere as a closed system, then the distribution of gases into layers makes certain sense. This is certainly not proof of any ancient model of the world, but it raises questions.

The layer of stars that we observe at night also remains a subject of contemplation. Is it possible that it is arranged differently than is commonly believed? Some pay attention to the recurring celestial cycles and suggest that the observed picture may have a different nature. We cannot say with certainty whether what we see consists solely of physical objects or if there are other, currently unknown phenomena involved. However, one thing is certain - the sky is filled with energy that modern science can record and measure.

If one imagines that there is some kind of dome above the Earth, the question arises: is it possible to go beyond its limits? When rockets are launched, we always observe their takeoff, but rarely can we trace the entire path to the supposed exit into space in real-time. For some, this is just a filming peculiarity, for others - a reason to ponder.

Mysteries abound. What lies beyond Antarctica? Is it just a continent or something more? Where does our known world end? For now, these questions remain unanswered.

An interesting analogy can be drawn with the closed ecosystem created by David Latimer inside a glass bottle. If a person is capable of creating a self-sustaining environment for life, some question whether our entire world could be a similar system created by God the Creator.

Today, thanks to the telecommunications era, people around the world are connected by underwater internet cables. We can freely exchange information, discuss various hypotheses, and seek answers on our own.

It is important to remember: only study, research, and analysis allow us to get closer to understanding the surrounding world. Every person must draw their own conclusions based on the facts available to them and their own reflections. This is how a worldview is formed - when conclusions are born from observations of reality, not the other way around.

This is an experimental aircraft capable of flying faster than the speed of sound, but it does so much more quietly. This is important because thanks to such technologies, supersonic passenger flights could become a reality again.

Once, the "Concorde" allowed passengers to fly from New York to London in less than three and a half hours. However, its operation was discontinued, partly due to the powerful sonic boom generated when flying at supersonic speeds. Because of this, supersonic flights over land have been banned in many countries.

The X-59 has an unusual design: a long pointed nose, wide triangular wings, and a T-shaped tailfin. This aerodynamics allows the aircraft to distribute shock waves so that they are much weaker.

In addition, the special shape of the lower fuselage directs most of the shock wave upwards. As a result, instead of a loud bang, only a muffled sound is heard on the ground, comparable to distant thunder.

During a recent test flight, engineers checked the aircraft's maneuverability and how it handles loads at high speeds. If the tests are successful, the X-59 technology could pave the way for the return of quiet supersonic passenger flights.

A Brief History from the Aviation World.

In the 1970s, airlines wanted to operate long-haul flights over the ocean, but twin-engine aircraft were largely not permitted to do so.

The regulations at the time required that for flights far from alternate airports, the aircraft must have at least three engines. It was believed that if one engine failed, the remaining two could safely complete the flight.

This led to the development of aircraft like Boeing 727, McDonnell Douglas DC-10, McDonnell Douglas MD-11, and the famous Lockheed L-1011 TriStar. The third engine was placed in the tail section of the fuselage — at the base of the vertical stabilizer.

Over time, however, jet engines became so reliable that the regulations changed.

Thus, the ETOPS standard was introduced. It allowed twin-engine aircraft to perform long flights over the ocean, flying hundreds of minutes away from alternate airports.

The two modern engines provided the same thrust as three engines did previously, while consuming less fuel and being significantly cheaper to maintain.

Three-engine aircraft did not become any worse — twin-engine ones simply became better.

The last three-engine passenger airliner was produced in 2000. Since then, new passenger aircraft have only been manufactured with two or four engines.

Have you ever flown on a three-engine aircraft? Share in the comments.

I found a thread called "Future" on this site and realized that we can fantasize and discuss a lot here. After all, the future can unfold in various ways, so I decided to write down my thoughts.

Three Possible Scenarios for the Future

It seems obvious to me that there are three main outcomes for the future. Let's fantasize 50 years ahead.

The first option is the most positive. Humanity will actively develop, make new discoveries, create new technologies, and everything will move forward.

The second option is less positive — humanity will find itself in a kind of stagnation, with no noticeable development and no serious regression. Of course, this is unlikely, but such a scenario is also possible.

The third option is the worst. Wars or global cataclysms could lead humanity to degradation. Why do I say that such things may have already happened? Because it remains unclear where some civilizations, which seemed highly developed for their time, disappeared to. History of what happened before them has also been lost.

A Scenario of Rapid Human Development

I don't even want to discuss the second option in detail, as it seems unlikely to me. But the first and third ones deserve attention.

The scenario in which humanity starts to rapidly develop has both good and bad sides. After all, new developments and discoveries can be used for both good and for war. But for now, let's consider the positive scenario.

There is a hypothetical theory called Technological Singularity, proposed by programmer and science fiction writer Vernor Vinge. It states that technological development will become so rapid and complex that it will become uncontrollable by humans. He even predicted the timeframes when this could happen, and we currently live in a period that many associate with the beginning of such processes.

We are already seeing how artificial intelligence is developing. Its progress is so fast that it becomes difficult for people to keep up. AI already performs a large part of the work that only humans used to do. If everything continues to develop at such a pace, then according to Vernor Vinge's assumptions, a significant breakthrough in AI may occur between 2027 and 2030, and full singularity could happen around 2045.

And if we look at what's happening today, it seems that we really are moving in that direction.

Based on everything we see, it is quite possible that in a few decades people will not understand how many technologies work anymore. Most tasks may be performed for us by AI, robots, and automated systems. On one hand, this is good, but on the other — such technologies can also be used for darker scenarios.

Moving to the Worst Scenario

The worst scenario is that we may not reach technological singularity at all. Or the singularity itself could lead to severe consequences for humanity and destroy much of what humans have created over centuries.

Right now we see wars and destruction. During major conflicts, scientific laboratories, infrastructure facilities, communication systems, and even parts of the global internet can be destroyed. All this can set humanity back by decades.

If wars become even more widespread, humanity might even annihilate itself. In that case, civilization may vanish just as other civilizations possibly have in the past.

What’s the Conclusion

Therefore, the forecast for 50 years ahead remains extremely unpredictable. We can build theories, assume various scenarios, and fantasize, but no one knows for sure what the world will be like in half a century.

So, we can only discuss and reflect on the future. Which is what I propose all of us do.

How to fight laziness?

Tired of laziness? Discover effective strategies and tips to overcome procrastination, boost productivity, and achieve your goals. Start taking action today!

All people are lazy in themselves, and there's nothing you can do about it. Yes, there are workaholics who seem to be not lazy at all, but they also feel that way. They just get going while working and can't stop. But as soon as they slow down a bit — it will also be hard for them to return to the work rhythm.

I want to tell you about an absurd method of fighting laziness that works almost 100%, and that not many people know about.

When a person is too lazy to do something, no matter how absurd it sounds, they're still doing something. 🙂 They're watching TV, lying on the couch, drinking beer, or doing something else. Nevertheless, they are occupied with something. And that's a paradox. Because it seems to us that laziness is when you do nothing. In fact, laziness is when you're doing a lot of things, just not what you need to do for work or important household chores.

Now, let's talk about the most effective method of fighting laziness.

You might be a little surprised by this method, but I suggest that before criticizing, you should try it yourself. Moreover, it will only take you 5 minutes, and your laziness will disappear.

The method is quite simple and absurd: to defeat laziness, you need to... do nothing.

Doing nothing means literally nothing. Well, almost nothing. That is, you shouldn't lie on the couch, you shouldn't watch TV, and so on. You just need to stand in the middle of the room and stand. Just stand, doing nothing but standing.

And believe me, after 5–10 minutes of such standing, you will gather your thoughts, remember important tasks, and you will desperately want to stop standing and start working on them.

So that's the perfectly simple method for combating laziness that works 100%.

So, tell me, did it work for you?

Without Good, There Would Be No Evil, or How a Philosopher Kicked Me Out of Class

Dive into the philosophical analysis of the contradictions of good and evil, and discover how one lesson can change the perception of life. Read the story of how philosophy led to an unexpected conclusion in the classroom.

Since childhood, I have been thinking about this: what is good and what is evil at all?

Essentially, these are terms to which we have attached our own concepts. We were taught from childhood: this is bad, and this is good. But what if everything were the other way around? What if we lived in another world where all people were bad, and for them this would be normal?

We wouldn't even realize that good is good and evil is bad in our current understanding. Perhaps everything would be perceived completely differently.

If you think about it, even in the current world, there are people who really do not understand this. For them, evil is good, and good is either bad or considered a manifestation of weakness.

Once in the 7th grade, I raised this topic in one of the first philosophy classes. And something happened that I did not expect at all.

The philosopher suddenly got incredibly angry and started yelling at me, saying that I didn't understand anything at all. To be honest, I was shocked. After all, I wasn't arguing with him or trying to offend anyone. I was just curious to reason.

I replied to him:

— But this is a philosophy lesson. Do I not have the right to reason, do I?

And here things got even stranger.

He literally lost it and just kicked me out of the class. :)

Even now, I sometimes remember this case and wonder: what exactly bothered him so much? Was it the question itself? Or the fact that someone decided to look at familiar things from a different angle?

I have always thought that philosophy exists precisely to ask uncomfortable questions. Those very questions for which there are no ready-made answers at the end of the textbook.

What do you think? Was I thinking correctly back then? Did I have the right to reason about such things in a lesson that is supposedly created for reasoning and exploring different perspectives on the world?

Remote work has stolen my office — and I still haven't decided whether to be happy about it or not.

"Find out how remote work has changed my office and how I feel about it. Thoughts on the pros and cons of the new working conditions."

Should you switch to remote work forever, or is there a trap behind convenience that rarely gets talked about?

Just a few years ago, like thousands of other people, I stood in traffic every morning, drank lukewarm coffee on the go, and counted the minutes until the end of the workday. At that time, remote work seemed like a ticket to a happy life. Wake up, open the laptop — and you're already at work. No bosses behind your back, no stuffy offices, and endless meetings.

When I was first offered to switch to full-time remote work, I thought, "This is it. Freedom."

But then something happened that I did not expect at all.

The home turned into an office, and the office became a shadow

The first weeks felt like a honeymoon. I saved time on the road, worked in comfortable clothes, and felt like the master of my own life.

However, gradually, things began to surface that no one had warned me about.

The workday started to stretch like chewing gum. The laptop is always nearby. Messages come in the evening. Tasks appear on weekends. The boundary between work and life began to blur.

One day, I caught myself thinking something strange: I used to leave work to go home, and now I have nowhere to go.

Freedom or a golden cage?

Proponents of remote work love to repeat: "The main thing is the result, not the place." And there is some truth in that.

But there is another side.

The spontaneous conversations with colleagues disappeared. The sense of team vanished. Even simple communication started to feel like messaging with avatars on a screen.

That's when I first asked myself: have I traded live communication for comfortable isolation?

The numbers say one thing, but feelings say quite another

The facts are hard to ignore. Remote work allows for saving time and money, and many studies show an increase in employee productivity.

But here’s the paradox.

The longer I worked from home, the more often I heard from acquaintances the same phrase:

“I’m always busy, but somehow I feel more tired than before.”

And you know what? I started to understand what they were talking about.

The most unexpected discovery

There is one thing I realized not immediately.

Remote work does not solve a person's problems. It only amplifies what is already inside.

If you're organized — it will get easier. If not — the chaos will increase several times.

That's why there is simply no universal answer to the question, "Should you switch to remote work forever?"

For some, it's a ticket to freedom and a better balance between life and work. For others, it's a slow descent into loneliness and an endless workday.

What do you think?

Would you switch to remote work forever, or do you think the office is more necessary for a person than it seems at first glance? I’d love to read your opinion in the comments.

A story about how I mixed with the dirt of oligarchs

It happened about 15 years ago. I started working on a payment system project. I developed it from scratch, and it turned out to be one of the first SMS payment systems in its field, mainly related to internet resources.

The project developed, and at some point the question arose: what's next? How to grow? That's how I met an oligarch, and we began to develop the project together.

We created a partner program to attract new participants. The first partners were friends of this oligarch. They were all so important, privileged, looking down on you. In general, pretty unpleasant types.

I don’t know what happened to me then, but I started behaving like a complete jerk. And even with them. I could tell them to their face that they were nobody, that my project was way cooler than their capabilities (though, to be honest, that wasn't entirely true). And I said this so confidently and seriously that they simply lost their bearings. They didn't understand how someone could speak to them in such a tone.

And my partner, the oligarch, who was their friend, just laughed and encouraged me:

— Yes! Yes! Keep going!

For some reason, he really enjoyed watching some unknown guy put his friends in their place.

And here’s what’s interesting. I could say a bunch of unpleasant things to a person, tell them that I wasn't going to work with them and that I wouldn’t give them my system. A week would go by, or sometimes even less, and those people would come back. Much more cautiously this time.

They would come up and say something like:

— Maybe we can work together after all? We see you’re a decent guy.

And here’s what I still think about. As strange as it sounds, when you behave firmly and show that you don’t need a person, for some reason, they start to be drawn to you even more. An internal dissonance arises in them: why am I not accepted? Why aren't they admiring me like usual? And they want to fix that.

This happens not only in business. It often happens in personal relationships too: a person loves another, even though that person behaves quite poorly.

Paradoxically, but from my experience, I can say that this mechanism works very often. Not with everyone, of course, but with many. It doesn't matter who is in front of you — an oligarch, an ordinary guy, or a girl.

The hardest part is waking up that kind of toughness within yourself.

Now it has somehow disappeared. I have become an ordinary kind person, perhaps even too kind. And sometimes I feel like people take advantage of that.

So that’s the story.

Want respect? Don’t be afraid to be uncomfortable.

📖 Story / 🌙 My Dreams

A dream about my boss getting drunk

A dream about your boss drinking alcohol may indicate hidden issues in your work or relationship with management. Find out what such a dream could mean and how to interpret it!

I found a section where I will publish strange dreams — everything in the form of small notes. I often have strange dreams. And here is the first one :)

Today I dreamed that my boss and I were somewhere in a village, walking around at night. We were going to a lake for some reason and heard loud music and many people coming from a house. Someone was fighting, it was unclear what was happening.

We decided to go in, and it turned out to be a cool bar where you could drink and eat. So, we sat down, ordered food and a shot each. But for some reason, they served it in tiny 20-gram glasses, and not even a full one, just half.

We were sitting there, relaxing, until my boss got very drunk on vodka... And then I woke up, damn it. I really wanted to see what would happen next :)

Why do modern films often fall short of the classics?

Modern films often fall short of classics due to a lack of originality, an overload of CGI, clichéd plots, and commercial factors, which can affect the quality of the script and acting.

I grew up at a time when films were just starting to be made actively. I grew up in the USSR and now I watch both old and new films. I've begun to notice that old films or cartoons were made and shot very well — in terms of plot, staging, and overall quality. Despite the fact that there were no technologies like 3D, AI, and so on. Everything was shot on film, and cartoons were drawn by hand.

Interestingly, this applies not only to Soviet films. In different countries, I think the situation in this sphere is similar.

I tried to understand why they turned out to be so good and high-quality in essence in the 70s and 80s, and so far I've come to only one conclusion: at that time it was seen as art, people were passionate about the idea, they enjoyed creating something new. And now it has increasingly turned into business, and there is no inspiration to create something for the sake of the idea. They do it only for money, which is why many films or cartoons come out somewhat formulaic nowadays.

What do you think, why did it turn out this way?
