It happened about 15 years ago. I started working on a payment system project. I developed it from scratch, and it turned out to be one of the first SMS payment systems in its field, mainly related to internet resources.

The project developed, and at some point the question arose: what's next? How to grow? That's how I met an oligarch, and we began to develop the project together.

We created a partner program to attract new participants. The first partners were friends of this oligarch. They were all so important, privileged, looking down on you. In general, pretty unpleasant types.

I don’t know what happened to me then, but I started behaving like a complete jerk. And even with them. I could tell them to their face that they were nobody, that my project was way cooler than their capabilities (though, to be honest, that wasn't entirely true). And I said this so confidently and seriously that they simply lost their bearings. They didn't understand how someone could speak to them in such a tone.

And my partner, the oligarch, who was their friend, just laughed and encouraged me:

— Yes! Yes! Keep going!

For some reason, he really enjoyed watching some unknown guy put his friends in their place.

And here’s what’s interesting. I could say a bunch of unpleasant things to a person, tell them that I wasn't going to work with them and that I wouldn’t give them my system. A week would go by, or sometimes even less, and those people would come back. Much more cautiously this time.

They would come up and say something like:

— Maybe we can work together after all? We see you’re a decent guy.

And here’s what I still think about. As strange as it sounds, when you behave firmly and show that you don’t need a person, for some reason, they start to be drawn to you even more. An internal dissonance arises in them: why am I not accepted? Why aren't they admiring me like usual? And they want to fix that.

This happens not only in business. It often happens in personal relationships too: a person loves another, even though that person behaves quite poorly.

Paradoxically, but from my experience, I can say that this mechanism works very often. Not with everyone, of course, but with many. It doesn't matter who is in front of you — an oligarch, an ordinary guy, or a girl.

The hardest part is waking up that kind of toughness within yourself.

Now it has somehow disappeared. I have become an ordinary kind person, perhaps even too kind. And sometimes I feel like people take advantage of that.

So that’s the story.

Right now, artificial intelligence essentially represents a vast knowledge base. It has studied a colossal amount of information from the internet and other sources, after which it makes conclusions, finds patterns, and connections based on this data. But the main question is different: will AI be able to make truly new discoveries?

I think that even in its current implementation, AI is already capable of finding something new — something that humans might have simply missed in the vast amounts of information. Essentially, artificial intelligence was created precisely to search for hidden correlations in datasets. But the question remains: will it be able to discover something fundamentally new, something that humanity does not yet know at all?

If we look at the history of science, many discoveries happened by accident. Someone mixed something incorrectly, assembled a device "not according to directions," or conducted an experiment that was not supposed to work — and in the end, something new resulted.

For example:

The discovery of penicillin occurred because Alexander Fleming simply left laboratory dishes with bacteria and then noticed that mold had destroyed them.
Viagra was actually developed as a heart medication, but in the end, the most famous effect turned out to be completely different.

And there are a huge number of such examples.

Therefore, I believe that AI will indeed be able to make new discoveries, but only if it is given more opportunities to interact with the real world. Right now, it has vision, sound processing, some robotic manipulators, but that is not enough. It does not feel the physical world like a human: it does not understand pain, destruction, randomness, and the consequences of mistakes.

The more sensors, tools, and freedom for experiments AI has, the greater the chances for real discoveries. And perhaps the most groundbreaking AIs will be those that can conduct "absurd" experiments — understanding in advance that the chance of success is minimal, but still trying again and again. Something like the human "what if it works."

It seems to me that it is at this moment that artificial intelligence will be able to reach the level of truly important discoveries.

The main thing is that in the end, this does not turn into Skynet :)

What do you think — is it possible to create AI that becomes completely autonomous? And in what direction should humanity move to achieve this?
