Is higher education necessary in 2026?

We have all been conditioned from childhood about the importance of getting a good education in this life. From a young age, we all know the "standard" learning route – first school, then college or university. And supposedly, this path guarantees us a high-paying job, a place in society, and other "perks."

But is this really the case now? Is a higher education necessary in 2026? And how important is a diploma for a secure and happy life?

Our world is constantly changing. And it requires rapid changes from us. This applies to literally all spheres of life – including professional skills.

What career paths exist today

In the Soviet years, the order for obtaining education was clearly defined – a child finished school and entered higher education. Children who lacked knowledge and abilities could continue their education in vocational schools after the 9th grade. As a result, they obtained a specialization that allowed them to work in factories, collective farms, and other organizations as regular middle staff.

Those who aspired to management positions and the status of a specialist certainly aimed for institutes. Only a "diploma" in higher education opened the path to better job positions. Diplomas were needed for teachers, doctors, researchers, economists, and accountants – in short, for all those whose profession required special knowledge and training.

Overall, these career paths are still preserved today. It's just that schools are now called colleges, and institutes – universities. But along with them, there are now many courses and other ways to master a profession.

So, what courses do we have today:

• Beauty industry – you can become a hairdresser, nail service master, cosmetologist, colorist, or makeup artist after an express course in the respective specialty;
• Entertainment industry – there are courses for professional photography and videography;
• Medicine – there are courses for masseurs, podologists, and even nurses;
• IT sector – the variety of courses is simply enormous, ranging from training copywriters and targetologists to graphic design and programming.

In large cities, you can find courses for almost any specialist. Usually, they are characterized by a short duration of training – from a few months to a year. And upon completion, a person receives not a diploma but a certificate.

This certificate is, in principle, sufficient to secure a position in some private company. Many business owners do not fuss about the educational requirements for their employees. For them, the main thing is that a person can and knows how to work. And a diploma is of little concern.

However, in government institutions, the hiring process is different. In such organizations, there are still requirements for educational documents. The paradox is that the skills and experience of the applicant are of little concern there. If you don’t have a "diploma," you definitely won’t get a position.

And, of course, for doctors, teachers, engineers, accountants, and other key specialists, a diploma is still mandatory. It doesn’t matter whether you plan to work in a private or government company – everywhere you will be asked to show a document confirming the presence of higher education during the first interview.

What about self-education?

Yes, there is also this path to obtaining professional knowledge. In essence, many of the courses currently offered can be completed independently. You can easily find all the necessary instructions and even step-by-step algorithms on the internet. All that is needed is patience, self-discipline, and a willingness to study the chosen field.

Of course, there may be problems with getting a job in this case. The thing is, every firm, whether private or public, must comply with certain requirements regarding its staff. Therefore, they cannot accept you without a "diploma" for a position that requires certain education. Because at the first check by the regulatory authorities, questions will be raised for management.

But working independently is quite possible. This path is ideal for self-employed and individual entrepreneurs. For such forms of employment, a diploma does not matter. Only those specialists who truly possess practical knowledge are in demand. Where they gained that knowledge is of no interest to anyone.

Is a diploma in IT really necessary today?

The topic of working in the IT sector concerns many. We have heard about the demand for programmers and their unrealistically high salaries. The prospect of working for foreign or international companies is also appealing.

Indeed, in this field, there are no borders – neither governmental nor financial. A good specialist can find a job abroad and have incredible prospects for the future. If that is your goal, then you definitely need a diploma. Moreover, such employers pay close attention to the university you attended. In this regard, there is even a ranking of educational institutions.

However, as recent years have shown, it is becoming increasingly difficult for programmers to secure good positions. Large companies are constantly reducing staff and making increasingly stringent demands on applicants. As a result, many specialists are going into "independent sailing" – working as self-employed or entrepreneurs. And in such work, their professionalism is much more important than a university "diploma."

So is going to university worth it and what does it give?

It may seem that a university "diploma" is not that important. Why spend 5 years studying when you can take courses or learn the chosen field on your own and work independently?

But studying at a university is much more than just receiving a diploma. Here’s what a university actually provides:

• develops thinking and logic;
• teaches self-discipline and persistence;
• helps to establish valuable connections.

Believe me, a person with higher education finds it much easier to start their own business and achieve success in it. Personal qualities that are instilled precisely through university education help in this. The value of useful connections cannot even be discussed – we all know how important it is to have friends in any field.

So, applying to university is definitely necessary. Choose a field that truly interests you. This will make it easier for you during and after your studies. But even if things don’t work out with a job in the profession you received – there’s no need to panic. You can always choose another path, take the same courses, or think of something else. Because you will have what is much more important than any "diploma" – intelligence, resourcefulness, and self-confidence.
